"Hopefuls" is a term used for potential apprentices to the High Aldwin of the Nelwyn Valley.

When Hopefuls are presented to the High Aldwin, the Sorcerer performs a test on them to see if they have merit as an apprentice.
During a Nelwyn Planting Festival, Willow Ufgood and two other hopefuls appeared before the High Aldwin. When none of the Hopefuls could properly answer his single question, he announced "No apprentice this year!"[1][2]
